Erosion and Sediment Control for NSW Construction Sites

Land disturbance changes how water moves across a site. A useful erosion and sediment control brief identifies the risks, control sequence, inspection responsibilities and evidence needed before work starts—not just a list of devices.

Erosion control and sediment control are different

Erosion control reduces the detachment and movement of soil at its source. Sediment control captures soil that has already been mobilised before it leaves the work area. Effective site planning uses both, with priority given to limiting disturbance and stabilising exposed areas.

Source conditions

Map slopes, soils, existing vegetation, disturbed areas, stockpiles and likely work fronts. The risk changes as excavation, filling, trenching and access routes move through the programme.

Inspection, weather readiness and change control

Routine inspection

Check whether controls remain correctly located, stable, connected and accessible. Look for undercutting, overtopping, bypass flow, accumulated sediment, damaged stabilisation and tracking onto roads.

Before forecast rain

Review available capacity, exposed areas, stockpiles, drains, diversion paths, inlets and discharge points. Confirm response resources and escalation responsibilities are available.

After rainfall or site change

Inspect performance and record what occurred. Repair or adjust controls before the next risk period, and review whether changed staging, levels or drainage paths have made the plan inaccurate.

Evidence and handover

Keep the current plan, inspection records, photographs where useful, maintenance actions, removed-sediment records and approved changes. Retain the project-specific evidence required by the contract and authorities.
