Reliability is the ability to support promises with current, scope-relevant evidence. Before appointing a contractor, confirm the legal entity, required licences or registrations, insurance, project experience, delivery controls and responsibility for design or compliance documentation. A rating can be a useful prompt, but it should never replace these direct checks.
Use the same questions for every tenderer. Consistent checks make proposals easier to compare and expose gaps before they become site risks.
Document the work, location, access, operating constraints, programme and required approvals. Use a written scope of works brief so each tenderer prices the same information; a contractor cannot demonstrate suitability against an undefined brief.
Check that quotes, insurances and credentials relate to the same legal entity that will sign the contract. Ask who will supervise the work and who has authority to approve changes.
Use the Service NSW licence check and request evidence relevant to the exact work. For NSW regulated building work, clarify the roles of the builder, designer and registered practitioners rather than assuming one party owns every responsibility.
Check policy type, insured entity, limits, expiry and exclusions against the project risk. If specialist subcontractors are involved, ask how their insurance and competency are verified.
Look for projects with a similar scale, environment and technical challenge. Useful evidence shows what was delivered, the contractor's role and how constraints were managed.
Ask how drawings, approvals, inspections, defects, variations, safety records and handover documents will be managed. Reliable delivery is visible in the process, not only the finished photograph.

Use any rating as one input. Then verify the contracting entity, project-specific capability, licences or registrations, insurance and proposed delivery team directly.
